Goethe was one of the great Brazil experts of his time. The only plant genus named after Goethe is the Brazilian mallow genus Goethea. Goethe wrote to Nees von Esenbeck in March 1826: "I would also like to add a request for some impressions of the Goethea, which I would like to have illuminated."

He was happy to receive Brazilianists and travellers to Brazil such as Martius, Eschwege and Sternberg in Weimar. Madame Vogel from Dresden was also gladly received in Weimar, all the more so because she was accompanied by a famous traveller to Brazil.
